Hussy Fit Wants You To Listen

A new single is out From the band Hussy Fit and You Need it on your Playlist

Nashville’s raucous self-monikered “bubblegrunge synth punk riot band” Hussy Fit has a new single out called ‘Listen’ and well, you should. The group recently posted on their Instagram that if they get to 1,000 streams by April 24th, “we’ll return to the studio in May (and play 2 festivals that month)”, and if they receive 2,000 by the end of April, “we’ll record 2 new songs”. I can tell you this much; we want that to happen. Hussy Fit is an incredible band that has been wowing the Middle Tennessee DIY scene with their sensational live performances. Cordie Nicole is a force as the front-person, treating the audience to a high-energy presentation. She is dazzlingly infectious with a voice that has a myriad of range and can keep vocal tempo with the fast-pace-swarming sounds that the band provides.

To engage with Hussy Fit is to mix all your favorite cereals together.  They are dynamic in flavor. The band pulls from genres past and present and keeps their personal style at the focal point. The band consists of Cordie Nicole adding synth flare to her vocal prowess, Izzy Cring – bass, vocals, Nick Doukas – guitar, Saige Cordero – guitar, backing vocals, and Jackson Tsukahara – drums.  For this single they brought Seth Lake in for multiple guitar parts and let producer Lonny Cagle chime in on those gang vocals for the track.

A deep buzzy guitar riff rips open the song, followed by a snap of attention getting passionate screaming of the starting line lyric “Just fucking listen to me”. It’s a quintessential place of emotional amplitude that is justified throughout the rest of the songs prose.  Hussy Fit is not only equipped with grungy cuts filled with thick, gritty, and compressed tones but they also provide a softness in their tracks that highlight those themes of trauma and wanting to be heard. This single cuts straight to point and it is concise in its meaning.

Sounding off with lines like “So I’m not asking anybody for nothing/ I’m not telling anyone to be like me/ I just do what I can/ If you don’t understand,/ Then why you talking, talking, talking to me?/ You never listen to me” drive the narrators perspective into the skull of the listener.  Musically these words are pushed forward by punchy bass lines and hard-hitting drum jabs that complement each other so fantastically well. It sounds like an anthem that is very much essential in today’s society.  There needs to be more listening and understanding rather than talking AT people and trying to tell them what they need to do.  Advice is always welcome, but telling someone that they are plain wrong is misguided.  The soothing synth pushing underneath the entirety of the song gives a notion of stability in this format.  The production, mixing, and arrangement are lovely.

Thank you for your diagnosis
Thank you for all your concern
Guess girls like me we never learn
You’ll say we’re asking for it, for it, for it….
But I’m not asking anybody for nothing
I’m not telling anyone to be like me
I just do what I can;
If you don’t understand, then why you talking, talking, talking to me?

Cordie also posted to REDDIT:

“This is my band’s 2nd single, and it means a lot to me personally. I wrote it during a really rough time. It’s about realizing that nothing will change until you do, taking responsibility but not blame. This song changed my life, but it took time. The moment I started taking action and living the life I wanted, even when I didn’t fully believe in myself, everything started to shift. We’d love your genuine feedback. This year, we’re planning to spend less time playing shows and more time writing and recording, so we can release more music. And any thoughts on what we could do to make our upcoming releases even better would mean a lot”.

There are shimmering pieces of bands like The Breeders, Sleater-Kinney and Pavement that sparkle in the instrumental hands of Hussy Fit. Sonically the track creates a strong tide that pulls the attender of sound between hope and a sense of drowning.  An honesty in the songwriting that isn’t overcomplicated is a nice status for music that sometimes gets too convoluted and lost in metaphor.  ‘Listen’ has the intonation of punk, grunge and metal wrapped into a wonderfully organized structure. At just over 4 minutes long it is an ideal song to start your day with or scream at the top of your lungs in the shower. This band is on an upward trajectory that will hopefully culminate in a full-length album, but they need your support to make that happen.  So, stream the songs and more importantly go see them live.
