Meghan Pulles: New Single and New Record

‘The Midheaven’ by Nashville siren and songsmith, Meghan Pulles, is out on July 31st and it’s stunningly ethereal and hauntingly beautiful. The new single is part of a grander plan, in full album form, that is set to release on August 28^th.  It’s Meghan’s sophomore album and it’s called Portraits of a Heavy Heart Vol. 1. Meghan has said that “Portraits of a Heavy Heart Vol. 1 is a collection of songs that holds space for grief, love, healing, and the quiet moments that shape who we become. Each song is a portrait of a different emotional experience, inviting you to see pieces of your own story reflected back with compassion. After getting a copy of the album earlier this month, I can honestly say that Pulles has left everything on the table and has come at us with a record from a deeply emotional place and ‘The Midheaven’ is just a sample of her putting her vulnerability on display so that the world may not only empathize together but also begin to heal through human connection. When the single drops, there will also be a gorgeously shot, black and white video, to accompany it. This is the first time that Pulles has released a video and a single on the same day. Meghan’s voice floats in the atmosphere and invites you to take part in the feast of her magical lyrics. Her words are a sonnet filled with staggering imagery that invokes heartfelt sentiment. The opening prose is: 

When your words lost power,  

Took the final hour  

When your heart goes sour,  

I wait for the cower  

The moon hides  

Behind the night sky,  

The gloom lies  

In front of your eyes

In the video, Meghan is presented to us from behind a veil as she gives us these words. From here, she is seemingly finding her truth and power, and eventually she unmasks herself to the audience.  The song continues and the pace of the music becomes bolder.  There is a triumphant resonation that pokes through the morose facade, and a transition is heightened through the singer’s action. At around the three-minute mark the shroud covers her eyes once again, and there are somber angelic tones heard vocalizing a mystical chant that returns Pulles back inward.  Maybe as to say that while we recognize our current position in life, our past is very much a part of who we have become. 

Her voice is the main vehicle for this particular storytelling, as the soundscape of instrumentation flows subtly in the background. Her words are doing the driving, and we are going to a destination that is laced in both vulnerability and hope. That has always been the force behind Meghan’s music.  Although I am just getting in touch with her sonic formula, I am finding that she uses her imperfections, as it were, to maintain stability and create growth and maturity. This is how she shares and how she learns.  ‘The Midheaven’ is a stone that has been inscribed with her mantra, and the symbolisms are for the listener to decipher and take what is meaningful to them.

Meghan also stated, “’The Midheaven’ was written from the realization that stepping into the life you’ve always dreamed of does not make you immune to grief. As my career continues to grow, I have found myself holding excitement and heartbreak at the same time, watching parts of my world fall away while still believing something beautiful is ahead. I hope this song reminds people that there is room for both, and that neither makes the other any less real”.
