New Look For Jane’s Addiction?
The band may be reforming without Perry Farrell
Members of Jane’s Addiction have teased new music on social media. However, it is without frontman Perry Farrell. Guitarist Dave Navarro, bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins might be getting back in the studio together according to a post on Avery’s Instagram.
Last September, the band announced the cancellation of its remaining tour dates following an onstage altercation between singer Perry Farrell and Navarro. The band said it “made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group,” therefore forfeiting the rest of the dates of their tour. A short time later, Navarro, along with Perkins and Avery, posted a joint statement to their respective Instagram accounts in which they said the cancelation of the tour is a result of a “continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell.” They continued, “Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs. We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis.” Soon after the explosive dismantling of the group, Farrell’s wife said the singer “already has appointments with a otolaryngologist and a neurologist,” and that he would be taking the time “to reflect and to heal” after the altercation.
Navarro and Avery formed the band Deconstruction in 1993 after the initial dissolution of Jane’s Addiction, so it is possible that the musicians are referring to a potential revival of that group. Deconstruction released one self-titled album in 1994 before Dave Navarro moved on with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Navarro has spent some time on Instagram reminiscing about those sans Farrell days recently. “I think that some of the magic between Eric and I musically is most definitely evident on this project,” Navarro posted about the Deconstruction LP, which is now available on streaming services. “I’d say it’s more cinematic and soundscapey than traditional song-oriented. Perhaps that’s why it was a tough listen for some. Having revisited it after all these years I believe this record contains some of my favorite recorded playing and interplay between E’s bass and my guitar.”
No more details were provided, leaving it unclear if the trio are planning to continue as Jane’s Addiction with Farrell back in the fold, or if they have another direction in mind. Last year, the core four released two new tracks, marking the first time the original lineup had worked together on new music since 1990. ‘Imminent Redemption’ was followed by “True Love’ after the tour imploded.
