Free Gaga! Yes Please
Lady Gaga’s Free Concert on Rio’s Copacabana Beach Draws 2.5 Million People
Lady Gaga isn’t going anywhere and nor should she. In fact, she may be doing her best work most recently. I have seen Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta AKA Lady Gaga in concert twice and she is nothing short of stunning. It wasn’t until I first saw her in Orlando, Florida years ago that I realized what an amazing singer and talented musician she was. I knew she was an artist. I knew she was a performer. I knew she had an act. However, she has all the depth to back that up and she is showing that side more and more. Her new album, Mayhem, is a prime example of that. If you haven’t heard it yet, you are doing yourself a major disservice. Another toss-away descriptor, but I am lacking otherwise- it is brilliant. Her seventh studio album is what the kids would consider to be a “banger”. It is a maximum effort of all things Gaga, if that is at all possible. To date, however, I feel, it is her best work. You can hear all the knowledge that she has absorbed over the years poured into this record.

There is an industrial edge, an 80’s tone and electric dance party all happening in this record and last night she brought it to the people of Brazil. The singer held a free concert on Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro, on Copacabana Beach, and a crowd of 2.5 million people showed up to see the magic unfold. According to those who put together the concert, Gaga now holds the record for the highest-attended concert by a female artist in history. That record was being held by Madonna, who drew forth 1.6 million. During her performance, Gaga acknowledged the crowd and said, “Your spirit may be heard around the world tonight. Two and a half million people.” So she obviously was told what was happening.
Gaga had not been to Brazil in 13 years, so the anticipation for this show was heighten. She had planned to perform there in 2017, but due to an illness that show never happened. The atmosphere was part-frenzy, part-reverence during Gaga’s five-act “gothic opera”, which saw her cycle through her Coachella set list, dashing in tracks from her latest album and sprinkling in hits from her early electro-dance pop years such as ‘Paparazzi’ and ‘Poker Face’.

News came later that there was an attempted threat during the concert that the performer was unaware of until after the gig. Brazilian police said they thwarted a bomb attack planned for the festivities. The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro state, in co-ordination with the justice ministry, said that “the suspects had recruited participants to carry out attacks using improvised explosives and the plan was aimed at gaining notoriety on social media.” The person responsible for the plan and a teenager were arrested, the police said on the social media platform X.
A spokesperson for Lady Gaga said the singer’s team learned about the alleged threat through media reports Sunday morning. In a statement they said, “Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks. Her team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place.”
Gaga took to Instagram after her performance and talked about the show. She wrote, “Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show—the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you. An estimated 2.5 million people came to see me sing, the biggest crowd for any woman in history.” Gaga went on to say, “I wish I could share this feeling with the whole world—I know I can’t, but I can say this—if you lose your way, you can find your way back if you believe in yourself and work hard. You can give yourself dignity by rehearsing your passion and your craft, pushing yourself to new heights— you can lift yourself up even if it takes some time.” She thanked the people of Rio for “waiting for me to come back.” She concluded with saying, “Thank you little monsters all over the world. I love you. I will never forget this moment. Paws up little monsters. Obrigada. Love, Mother Monster.”

No one was reported to be injured during the show and fans were certainly treated to a spectacular performance (if you could get that close). It was said that even during her rehearsal, the day before, tens of thousands of fans came to catch a glimpse. It seems that 2025 going quite well for the musician and actor. The city of Rio said that $106 million dollars was injected into their economy by the one off show. I couldn’t find any reports of how much it cost to produce, including security, police and EMT standby’s, but kudos to Lady Gaga for making this zero cost to the fans.
