What Is The Meaning of Life?
Meg Elsier has a new song out that questions everything
Meg Elsier has been knocking down walls and grabbing the music world by the shoulders to shake it up over the last year. Something that she has always done, but now the industry seems to be listening. The extended version of her debut album ‘spittake’ dynamically shifted her world as she was signed to Bright Antenna Records and began a stretch of touring that had her sharing the stage with Liz Cooper and Blondshell. Elsier also relocated from Nashville to New York and added SXSW to her bio. Most recently, she appeared at Idaho’s Treefort Music Fest, which only elevates her musical status and confirms that she is a star on the rise. Her newest release is a single dubbed “meaning of life” and it showcases her growth as an artist. It’s vibe is less shoegaze and more alt-rock (Pixies meets Sonic Youth) than most of her previous releases and has that 90’s feel with grungy guitars that push a haze of fuzz into the forefront to illuminate the psychology of her lyricism.

Her voice floats in a space of sensibility and understanding but then jabs at reality and screams to be recognized. Her writing is always spot-on with truthful observations. This track specifically peers into a place that questions our humanity and pokes at the why?.
“’meaning of life” is about giving depression company,” meg shares. “It’s being fucking tired, stuck in self-sabotage and procrastination, feeling nothing and living vicariously through other people instead. It’s a pretty goddamn selfish song.”
She further explains, “It’s also about ruining normal, sweet moments with nihilistic thoughts, like what happens when I die while I’m trying to find that a Bed Bath & Beyond coupon. There’s no reason to it. And if there’s no reason to it, then maybe there’s no reason to me. It’s about the freedom and relief in realizing that maybe it’s not about everything being meaningless, but about how hard it is to find meaning when there’s no reason to it.”

The integrity of the music is striking a literal chord with fans and even some critics.
Since the release of her LP in 2024, she has received positive nods from DIY Magazine, DORK, OnesToWatch, and CLASH for her well-curated storytelling and defiant sound. Within the harmonious framework of this crafty tune, her poetry cuts deep. There is a tonal shift in the track that is perfectly placed two-thirds through to allow time for thought and reflection before pushing on again with the refrain of “there’s no reason to it“.
Meg again captivates us with her ability to tear down the walls of acceptance and challenges us to do better or at least recognize that we are not doing our best. “meaning of life” is a brilliant piece of art that demands your ear. Pay attention to the literature that she is handing to you of just get lost in the exquisite structure blended by the players and production.
