The Weird Sisters Have a New Single Out
The duo dropped ‘Wasting Time’ on April 24th and yeah, it’s another banger
The Weird Sisters were back in the studio once again, after recently releasing their live album, to record a brand new single. Fresh off the drop of Live at Post 82, Isaac Short and Gabrielle Lewis put a new song into the ethos on Friday, April 24th called ‘Wasting Time’. Their genre is “space-disco”, and their sound is a mixture of synth pop, electronica, funk, soul and a whole lot of cool effects blended above and in-between the notes. Think about Crystal Method (or Google them) and garnish them with Sly and the Family Stone, then mash in The Chemical Brothers and maybe toss a bit of Frank Zappa into the fray and you are halfway to an eclectic mix that begs you to move.

To delve into the complexity of their sound, you have to know about the time and effort that is put into their projects. Gabrielle mixed the background and played: Clavinet • Keyboard • Synthesizer• Upright Piano • Rhodes • Synth Bass, ooh and she does vocals on the track too. Isaac earns credit as the Lead Vocalist and pours in the Tambourine • Clavinet • Electric Guitar • 12-String Electric Guitar • Acoustic Guitar • Electric Bass Guitar and Drum Machine, so yeah, there’s a lot that goes into it. When you see them play live, it is a cavalcade of foot pedals and knobs turning, all while playing their instruments and singing melodic harmonies that match the tonality of lasers and humming spaceships. They are wildly mesmerizing and talented as all get out. So, when a new song comes from the depths of the minds from this dynamic duo, you know that the work has been put in and sonically it will be different from anything you typically hear in the mainstream.

The Weird Sisters stack their tones with precision on ‘Wasting Time’.. There is so much to hear, but it is not jumbled, and nothing is lost. The clarity and resolution are absolutely top notch. The band has all the control in their production and on this single they had Mike Fahey as the mixing engineer making the final product a well-constructed tune that resonates a consistent vibe. Drummer Jeff Brown also brings a jazzy percussion to the track that adds to the overall audio environment. There is a guitar that pops over top of the song illuminating the funk and giving the song a heightened quality that ultimately creates a visual arc in the reverberation. I am lofted into a space that is dreamlike upon listening.

The Weird Sisters have the ability to create these lovely sequences within their tracks. Isaac’s vocals on ‘Wasting Time’ draws you in and then Gabrielle’s voice presents a sensuality and siren-like quality that keeps you engaged. They work so well together, and they establish a synergy that is unmistakable. I love the movement that is brought forth in their music. It’s like being back at Studio 54 and yet, it’s something new. It is both futuristic and timeless, like all their work. Truly another gem that warrants all the accolades. Every time they put something out, I think I know what it will sound like, but then they surprise me with their unpredictability.
Please give yourself some time and (don’t waste it) listen to not only this beautiful art piece but delve into the entire catalog of this band. More importantly, go support them at a live gig and bring your antennae and 3D goggles.
