Jukebox Jam 3 comes to Cannery Hall

I am absolutely elated to say that there is a Jukebox Jam 3 happening this weekend.  One was exceptional, two was glorious and three looks to be spectacular. On Saturday, October 10th, at Cannery Hall, Jonathan Plevyak is once again cultivating a whole experience that you must be a part of. It’s phones down and attire up for a date night style 1950’s and 60’s soul and doo-wop inspired experience. The venue has changed but the line-up is once again stacked and let me tell you from previous attendance that this is a one of one adventure.  Last year’s room was blasted with a decor that rivaled the “Enchantment Under the Sea” theme from the prom scene in the movie Back to the Future. From what I have heard from Jonathan and others is that this year’s production will be even bigger and bolder.

Jonathan Plevyak was unknown to me when I moved here three years ago but today I call him a friend (he might say the same about me…maybe). We both need music to both narrate and orchestrate our lives. Only difference is he can play, while I just deliver the information.  My keyboard is my creative apparatus I suppose. Plevyak is a Nashville based soul singer with a divine vocal instrument that sounds as if it was lifted straight from a 1950s diner jukebox. In an era of fleeting trends, contrived algorithms and digital noise, Jonathan leans into timelessness, drawing inspiration from those legends like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Sam Cooke, and Billie Holiday to craft a sound that feels both nostalgic and unmistakably his own.

His 2024 debut EP, Made In The Shade, introduced that signature vintage style, warm, analog, and dripping with old-school charm. The breakout single “Wild, Love” has amassed millions of streams worldwide and inspired hundreds of thousands of TikTok creations, cementing Jonathan as one of Nashville’s most exciting modern-day crooners. Not only does he possess the accoutrements of those classic artists but he also rips some heavier rock and roll vibes with another project called Lombardy. Formed in 2021 by members Jonathan Plevyak (vocals, guitar) and Mike Scott (vocals, guitar), their musicality, mesmerizing live performances, and against-the-grain mindset have quickly cemented the group as a staple in the Music City Rock Community. Joined by rhythm section Seth Rentfrow (vocals, bass) and Steve Mascarello (vocals, drums) in 2023, Lombardy entered its new ‘attitude era’ and is on a renewed mission of mayhem. Imagine if Beck and The Beastie Boys had combined forces to write songs about Jane Fonda (google it). It’s like that.

So he is talented, but even above that, he is gracious and wants to see the community thrive in a world where divisiveness is all too present. So now Jonathan and his pal Joseph Garabed have literally set the stage for an evening of audience participation and engagement. They want you to take a break from that digital and noisy world and pay attention to real live people doing real live things. Jonathan says, “The evening is about getting away from distractions and being in the present”. Joseph adds, “More than ever we are inundated with noise. Smartphones, internet and tv are driving people away from each other.  This is a night where you really shouldn’t be on your phone at all.  Dance with somebody, make a new friend, bring a date.  Whether it’s your wife of 30 years, or a first date, connect with somebody and have a good time and come together.  That’s what this is all about”.

This isn’t a ban on phones.  They realize that technology exists, but this particular space in time is about a temporary stoppage in which your devices don’t need to command all of your attention.  And you are going to want to pay attention to this all-star lineup of Nashville Musicians, as well as those stopping in from elsewhere to help curate this nostalgic showcase.  Past performers across the first two Jukebox Jams have included Bre Kennedy, Bird & Byron, Kenny Sharp, Bonner Black, Arts Fishing Club, Cam Gallagher & The Tasty Soul and Dylan Chambers, among others. The audience turnout and engagement has consistently exceeded expectations both years, and Jukebox Jam has developed a strong word-of-mouth identity in Nashville. This year’s bill is Drey Skonie, Jack Lutz, Natasha Blaine, Tabitha Meeks, Marty Schwartz, Lyons Lane, Laney Jones and The Spirits, with Lombardy closing out the night. There is so much bang for your buck that it is a retro festival at this point.

Jukebox Jam is all ages and incorporates interactive elements that make the night feel like a true experience, rather than just a show.  There will be vintage photo booths, thrift pop-ups, hula-hoop contests (last year I believe the record was like 15 minutes), Sage & Serpent flash tattoos, polaroid photo stations, and more. The room really feels alive and electric before the first note is even played. Please go and get those tickets now before it sells out because this event is just growing and growing.  I am so proud to have met Jonathan and I am always humbled by his kind words about Rock Oracle. Jukebox Jam was really a jumping off point for my little ragtag writing project, so I say “Thank You Jonathan!”  Now let’s go dance!
