Maria Magdalena’s New Single ‘Smell Me I’m Running’ Is A Mystical Journey

Light and Dark Occupy A Beautiful Space in This Poetic Track

Introspection from Melinoe:
Editor in Chief Jason Shrum appointed me to be the voice that shares the insights from this lovely piece of art. As I have made my way through my schedule of artists, I found the Resurrection timing to be too perfect to be coincidence. I love the synchronization of magick within every cycle of time. Every custom of Culture. To Alienate yourself to one practice, is to remain limited to the chains of such practice. To find relation within all cultural customs, leaves you as vast as the Quantum Field. Here we receive the symbolic initiation of the Resurrection of the Magdalene. Spoken through the Muse, Maria Magdalena. It is an honor, an undeniable privilege to review this single and express my judgments to the world. Through the first listen, I was unable to focus on the lyrical content. Getting lost in the Visuals dancing around my imagination. I envisioned Angelina Jolie and Betty Boop. Taking me back to a moment in time. An era of Vintage and Traditional Customs. I witnessed a Woman, who simply desired to be free. To be as she was without the restraints of society and culture. What would the world be if man had not dominated woman? Where would life take us if the Dragon was honored, instead of slain? I feel womanhood represents that melancholy and carries the weight of such extinction.

In this modern era, in some small realms of the world, a woman is mostly able to ponder these questions. She is able to act out what it may mean to be a free woman of this world. A woman free from the biased lens of our inherited patriarchal mold. What if we were written without the venom that is the Male Gaze? Not the Masculine gaze that Worships the Goddess, but the Male Gaze that imprisons us all, even themselves. As the song concluded, I had to replay immediately. I wasn’t too sure how I could label the song. There were components of a more Gothic and/or Vampiric Undertone. A scene that could express various moments in time, however particularly, the 40’s-60’s came to mind. We have the melody cloaked in an essence of Femme Fatale, with a subtle bop that reminds one of Marina. Giving the song a connection to the Pop Femme Frequency. There is a darkness and lightness to the song. A duality that only an integrated soul could express. There is a sound in alignment with those who enjoy workings from artists such as, Alexa Dark, Luvcat and Portishead. An eclectic tuning that embodies the complexity of what it means to be a woman and feel as a woman feels.

Smell Me I Am Running” had me feeling into a vision of a woman, proving herself by sarcastically responding to an absent minded man. Like, “Smell Me” (instinctually while simultaneously obviously) I am running, duh! It is giving the same blatancy as “I’m a Mouse, Duh…” A classic Mean Girls reference for the Pop Culture Queens. The Attitude, the Feminism of Self Empowerment, and Acceptance for the Primordial Truths of being a Woman. I felt into a rejection of the Illusion that Women are somehow all Roses and Daisies. I loved feeling into the sweat of Wonder Woman, a Warrior Goddess doing the work for herself. Running to me represented more than the literal act of running, or the potential metaphorical laziness that one would relate this as a song of escaping.

While there may be a sense of freedom, and escape may become your surface level view, there is something more potent to the message of becoming and of Matriarchal presence. The symbolism that catches the eye within the name of Maria Magdalena (Mother Goddess Mary Magdalene). Or the translation into the etymology representation of “Tower.” May this song empower the feminine to be smelly. To Honor their Disruption. To be the Tower that dismantles the perfectionist chains of the patriarchy. To heal the Co-Dependency brainwashed amongst society. To spotlight the historic truth within the Divine Feminine. Radiating “I am Woman! Hear me Roar, and Watch me Soar!” I felt into the collective healing of the Feminine, as all women are awakening to their power. Within the Priestess perspective, the Magdalene emerges as the one who led Christ through His Ascension. Reconnecting to the Power of the Womb, and the Woman who took a Blind Leap of Faith (Taking a Bite of the Apple from the Serpent (Serpent=Transformation of Consciousness) in Trust of the Magick within the Universe) and Initiated Man into an Ascended Way of Being.

All in all, I find this song to be a beautiful creation. One I will most certainly be adding to my personal “Ritual Musings” Playlist. I can see myself craving this song as I dance under the Full Moon, as I am brattily antagonizing my husband, and as I am embracing my initiations into higher levels of Independence along this spiritual plane. An initiation of Self-Empowerment and Consciousness that can reach infinite limits depending on how intently you choose to listen. I look forward to surrendering down the Rabbit Hole that is Maria Magdalena and her Art. She most certainly has made a new fan out of me with this single. I encourage you all to take a Leap of Faith on her, just as she has taken a Leap of Faith, betting on herself.

Live Deliciously. Love Authentically. And Always, Stay Wyrd!

Press Release:

“An honest reflection of self-liberation, recorded at Mare Street Studio / Pony Recordings”
“LONDON — The multi-talented London-based artist, Maria Magdalena, announces her newest
single, “Smell Me I’m Running,” due out March 13 on Mixto Records.  The new song is an ode to self-love for the London-based Eastern European artist. Known for her dreamy, smoky fusion filled with poetic fantasy and raw, unfiltered emotion, and songs where love stories intertwine with childhood trauma. Her path started early, and by 15, she was performing in clubs and well into her classical vocal training. Her impressive journey has led her to intimate recording studios with the legendary Stuart Matthewman of Sade, writing sessions at the iconic house of Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, and hosting vibrant dragmusic nights alongside fellow queer performers, including members of the Polish drag troupeSlav 4 You. She has also graced many stages, including a memorable performance at Jack White’s renowned Third Man Records in London. All the while carving her own lane, a smoky fusion of blues and trip-hop, she refers to as “Billie Holiday and David Lynch having a lovechild in Eastern Europe.”

Adding to her repertoire, “Smell Me I’m Running” arrives as a declaration of independence. It’s not
shouted, but stated, with the kind of hard-won confidence that can only follow a period of hard truths. Where previous work navigated heartbreak from the inside, reactive, raw, “Smell Me I’m Running” arrives from the other side.  “Smell Me I’m Running” represents something of a watershed for Maria. Recorded at Mare Street Studio and at London’s own Pony Recordings, Maria says the song “feels like a turning point for me emotionally.” She continues, “The title is intentionally a little surreal, which reflects how I like to approach things. The song is about letting go of what isn’t good for me, unhealthy relationships, and patterns I’ve used as crutches. It’s about detachment, breaking cycles, and realizing I can be good on my own without needing chaos or validation.” “Smell Me I’m Running” is due out March 13 on Mixto Records and will be available everywhere you stream music.”
